What is A Vision Gallery?
A Vision Gallery is a participatory workshop and dialogue format that invites people to develop shared visions of the future for life in urban spaces. At its core is the question of how to shape a livable, inclusive, and diverse urban community. Participants are encouraged to think beyond existing structures and to give voice to their own ideas, aspirations, and perspectives.
STRUCTURE OF A Vision Gallery
At the outset, an open-ended or specific topic is chosen that stimulates visionary thinking, such as future coexistence in Vienna or within one’s own neighborhood. To support this process, guiding questions can be compiled that shed light on various aspects, such as social relationships, decision-making structures, or forms of education. Participants are encouraged to think without restrictions in order to foster creative and unconventional ideas.
In the first step, participants independently develop their own personal visions. These are then brought together in small groups (3–6 people) and synthesized into shared concepts. The resulting collective visions are presented in the room as a “Vision Gallery.” Participants move through the exhibition, comparing, discussing, and asking questions. The focus here is not on evaluating individual ideas, but on identifying commonalities, different perspectives, and possible directions for development.
What is the Goal of a Vision Gallery?
The format is designed to encourage active participation in shaping society, to help participants give concrete form to their visions of the future, and to enable them to experience how change is possible through collective thinking and action. Methodologically, it combines elements of facilitated group work, creative vision-building, and dialogic reflection with creative forms of expression (e.g., drawing, writing, sketching).
