Peacewalk 2026 is a 15-month walking journey from cities across Europe to Jerusalem/Al-Quds, a collective movement for peace and justice. In the summer of 2026 it passed through Austria. From Vorarlberg to Vienna and on to the Hungarian border, we walked from town to town and met the people already doing peace work where they live: local groups, initiatives and communities who don’t accept war as the last word. At each station along the route, we opened a shared conversation around two questions: what does peace actually require, and what is our own responsibility in it? Not as an abstract debate, but as a question put to each place we passed through. Civil Action Network served as the coordinating partner for Austria.

Who made it happen
Civil Action Network coordinated the Austrian leg. Our coordinators supported a team of six volunteers who mapped the route, reached out to local communities, found places to sleep, organised events and kept in touch with walkers along the way. More than 350 people joined the walk in Austria. On an average day, the group was 14 people strong.
The Peacewalk is an international network of many individuals, local initiatives and organisations. In Austria, five partner organisations helped shape the walk by spreading the word through their networks, organising local events and finding accommodation:
What we achieved
The Peacewalk in Austria…
…brought peace initiatives together. Groups from different regions of Austria, many of whom hadn’t worked together before, met, walked and organised side by side.
…carried the conversation about peace and justice across the country. From small villages to state capitals, the walk opened space for this conversation in 38 places across Austria.
…gave people a way to act on their values. For volunteers, hosts and walkers alike, the walk was a chance to contribute something meaningful to a cause they believe in.
…opened caring, thoughtful spaces to talk about peace, conflict and war. These conversations covered both the conflicts around us and those far away.
…met hundreds of people where they are. Countless one-on-one conversations and dozens of group exchanges, meetings, walks and discussions welcomed people with their own backgrounds, ideas and beliefs. Together, these encounters wove a rich picture of peace across many levels: inner, interpersonal, systemic and political.

What we carry forward
The connections made along the route don’t end when the walkers cross the border. We’re following up with the people and initiatives we met, with the aim of building a stronger, more connected civil society in Austria for the long run.
